Chinese Culture Theatre: Obedient to Mother with Flimsy Clothes

In daily life, we may encounter conflicts with our parents, especially when we feel that they are biased or treating us unfairly. What actions would you take in such situations? How difficult is it to practice the concept of filial piety?

 

"Obedient to Mother with Flimsy Clothes " is one of the tales from the Twenty-Four Filial Exemplars. The protagonist, Min Zi Qian, suffers abuse from his stepmother and can only wear a thin winter coat filled with reeds during the cold winter. When his father discovers this and is furious, wanting to divorce his wife, Min Zi Qian kneels and pleads for forgiveness, saying the touching words, "When the mother is cold, one child suffers; when she is gone, three children are alone." This performance prompts classmates to reflect on how to face family injustice with a forgiving heart, the true meaning of filial piety, and to experience the charm of drama through the performance.
